Overview:

The webinar will discuss why the 9th Amendment is a vital amendment that is responsible for protecting individual rights and limiting the powers of the federal government.  This presentation will focus on why the framers of the Constitution believed a Bill of Rights was necessary to protect individual liberties and how the 9th Amendment was included to ensure that the Bill of Rights was not to be interpreted as a complete list of rights granted to Americans.  Additionally, the webinar will explore how the 9th Amendment was a starting point for protecting liberty.

Course Objective:

  • Attendees will understand how unenumerated rights are protected by the 9th Amendment.
  • Attendees will recognize that the 9th Amendment allows the Supreme Court to expand individual rights throughout history with an analysis of Supreme Court cases.
  • Attendees will learn how the 9th Amendment has influenced the idea that the Constitution is a limited government document and strengthens the position that the federal government cannot expand its power beyond what is stated explicitly in the Constitution.

By the end of this 60-minute webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of the 9th Amendment and its role in protecting unenumerated rights beyond those explicitly listed in the Bill of Rights.
  • Analyze landmark Supreme Court cases that have used the 9th Amendment to expand individual rights, including the right to privacy.
  • Understand how the 9th Amendment reinforces the principle of limited government by restricting federal powers to only those expressly granted by the Constitution.
  • Identify key constitutional concepts such as penumbras, substantive due process, and their relationship to the 9th Amendment.
  • Appreciate the historical context and continuing significance of the 9th Amendment in safeguarding individual liberty
